expensive super cars crashing into a lagoon. was it all a multimillion-dollar disaster? or an elaborate front? we'll weigh on that in a moment. also, an oscar shocker, guys. the man behind some of the naughtiest characters on the small screen and big screen, is the surprise take. there he is, but just who is seth macfarlane? more on him ahead. first, let's get to the latest incident on american airlines. the story first reported here on "gma" on monday. the airline is under investigation by the faa, after seats came loose onboard three different midair flights. inspection inside the airline had now found more loose seats on more planes and abc's jim avila is here with the very latest. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. everything is on stake for american airlines, as passengers wonder what is next after a

rash of rare seat disconnects in midair. american airlines on the offensive this morning after reports of yet another plane, this time an american flight from vail to dallas last wednesday, having rows of seats come loose. the third report in less than a week. >> we have seats loose in the back. and we need to return to base. >> reporter: the airline insisting those frightening maintenance issues that allowed the seats to attach forcing at least two jumbo jets to abort their trip have nothing to do with the airline's bankruptcy or labor troubles. >> this is a mechanical issue. it's not related to anything despite all of the rumors and speculation. >> reporter: that may not be enough for frightened passengers like this woman, too skittish to allow her face to be shown. >> the seat flipped backwards. so, people were essentially on the laps of the passengers behind them with their legs up in the air. >> reporter: this morning, american tells abc news, it is inspecting eight 757s in its fleet which had new seats

installed recently. the nation's third largest airline saying, contrary to those headline-making flight delays in september, double the norm, after fights over pilots as part of a labor action, this more serious maintenance safety issue had nothing to do with disgruntled workers. >> these are unrelated to the issues with the aircraft with the seat issues. >> reporter: but not everyone is convinced. aviation experts we contacted say they can't remember one case of detached seats, much less three in less than a week. >> it could be sabotage. or it could just be sloppiness. either way, it's a disaster for the airline. >> reporter: "the wall street journal" travel editor warned against flying american airlines because of dependability issues. now, some aviation experts warn against booking with the airline before the airline finds out what's behind the seat issues. elizabeth and george. >> jim, i'm going to take it

from here. we have breaking news. a u.s. border patrol agent has been killed another agent wounded along the u.s./mexico border near bisbee, arizona. officials are not providing details on the circumstances or possible suspects. the last agent killed brian kerry who died in the fast and fur use gun operation. 37 people killed and more than 100 rushed to hospital after a passenger boat collided with a ferry you saw off of hong kong. the boat was packed with families heading to a holiday fireworks show. at least six crew members have been arrested for negligence. here at home, an amtrak train carrying 160 passengers collided with a tractor-trailer in central, california sending three cars crashing off the tracks. 21 people were injured. officials say the truck driver

failed to yield at a crossing. meanwhile, a short time later, just ten miles away, another truck plowed into a different train. the driver of that truck was seriously hurt in the crash. and american express has agreed to pay nearly $113 million in refunds and fines to settle claims it deceived customers with its marketing and billing practices. some 250,000 cardholders will get refunds. a major recall to bring you by honda. 2003 to 2007 accord v4 is being recalled because of a faulty power steering hose that could cause a fire. honda won't have replacement parts ready until early next year. and take a look at this. a brazen daylight heist in california. two men, armed with pick axes made off with some $2 million in gems and gold from the state mining museum. they couldn't get their hands on the biggest prize of all. that is a nearly 14-pound

crystalline gold. they tried to get that. but it triggered an alarm and managed to escape. no such luck for a 10-year-old in philadelphia, who decided to take a furniture truck for a joyride. you can see him there. spot shadowed. the truck hitting a few cars at a very low speed, five in all. then, the boy gets out. tries to run away. people on the street quickly move in. they surrounded him. and the 10-year-old, young lad is now in custody. finally, scientists amazed and frankly so am i, after watching video from an underwater experiment. take a look. they tied a canister full of bait with chains. they were shocked to see this octopus pull up. we have sped the video up. essentially, this octopus began untying the cable straps holding the bait to the chain. it took quite a while. but he diligently made away with the whole thing. >> oh, my gosh. >> scientists have lawn known,

octopus is a smart fella or lady. >> fella? >> yeah. a hyper tactile, apparently. >> when you have eight arms, you have a lot of different ways to hold on and untie. >> thanks. the race for the white house, now. it's "your voice, your vote," just 35 days before the final vote. and president obama and mitt romney, one day away from that first and crucial debate. both candidates cramming in private. the stakes could not be higher for romney behind now in the battleground states. abc's jake tapper is in las vegas where the president has set up his debate camp. good morning, jake. >> reporter: good morning, george. that's right, both campaigns have been intensity participating in mock debates. president obama working on keeping his answers concise. mitt romney, his aides say, is getting used to the one-on-one format, with the race so tight, anything could happen and so much could ride on tomorrow night. mitt romney held a rally in denver overnight, where he previewed tomorrow night's fireworks. >> these debates are an

opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. and the american people have to make their choice as to what kind of america they want. >> reporter: he will likely start the day tomorrow with a workout. he's an elliptical machine kind of guy. meanwhile, the president is at this posh resort in nevada where he'll no doubt also be hitting the gym before getting another day of debate practice. while he may be strong physically, he admits he's out of debate shape. romney debated most recently in february. >> i think the earmarks, we had it with them. >> reporter: the last time the president debated was almost four years ago. >> we've got to have a president who is going to tackle it head on. >> reporter: it's not clear how much this is lowering expectations. but sources tell abc news, that the president's debate prep has been exhausting and he's clearly out of practice. something he acknowledged while working the phones at his nevada campaign office. >> basically, they're keeping me indoors all the time. they're making me do my homework. >> reporter: george, in the latest quinnipiac poll,

has romney behind obama. 49% for the president, 45% for mitt romney. the big difference in this poll, obama up 18 points among women voters. romney up 10 points among male voters but as we know, it's much more important to look at state by state, whereas in some places it's too close to call. for instance, here in nevada one of the key battleground states, president obama up 49% to romney's 47%. that's within the margin of error. too close to call, george. >> okay, jake, thanks very much. an important health alert this morning. a recall that began with peanut butter, sold at the grocery chain trader joe's, is widening after a salmonella outbreak. 30 people sick in 19 states so far. most of them kids under the age of 10. and now the company that

supplied that peanut butter is recalling other nut products that are also sold in some of the nation's biggest retailers. let's bring in abc's dr. richard besser now. rich, this recall includes 101 different products, including products that aren't peanut butter. just products made with nuts. i wanted to throw everything out of my kitchen. what do we keep? >> that's right. that's a lot of products. it's covering a lot of different brands. you have to check the list to see if your products are there. for some kids, peanut butter is the main stay of their diet. so don't do that. >> we know a million people get salmonella poisoning every year. but kids under 10, it's particularly serious. what are the symptoms? >> yeah, you worry about children, kids under 5. the elderly, and anyone with immune problems. about 12 hours to 3 days after eating something that's contaminated, fever, cramps, diarrhea, poisoning. if a child looks real sick, take them in. there are danger signs. high fever is one of those. severe stomach pain.

and we are getting a rare glimpse inside a world that feeds on secrecy. >> gabriele seemed calm, serious, a bit tense at times. >> reporter: no one was closer to the pope, waking him in the morning, bringing him his meals. when investigators raided gabriele in his apartment, they carried off 82 boxes of evidence, including stolen documents. gabriele is accused of being the source of damning leaks that filled the papers here all spring. saying the vatican was a sea of corruption and cronyism. construction contracts given to friends. people buying audiences with the pope for $13,000. >> it became painfully clear he does not have his hands on the rudder. he looks very much like a weak pope. >> reporter: the pope returned to the vatican yesterday after three months at his summer residence outside rome. at 85, he is noticeably in decline. the papacy tainted by the leaked

documents. the blind and the intrigue and infighting all around him. as for gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three who lived at the vatican, he has said he leaked the documents out of loyalty to the pope, inspired by the holy spirit. no one here believes the butler really did it on his own. he has been on the stand all morning, sticking to his defense. these proceedings expected to end by the weekend. he could go to jail for four years. but he's asked the pope for a pardon. that's very likely, we're told, what will happen. george? >> jeffrey, thanks. potentially explosive trial there. >> sounds like something out of a movie. thanks, george. now, to a disturbing story out of san diego seaworld, where a killer whale is recovering from a mysterious wound. the big question, did it come from an accident? or from an attack from another whale? abc's cecilia vega has the story. >> reporter: this is what orcas do best at seaworld san diego, put on a killer show. but now, an 11-year-old killer whale at the park is injured,

with a gaping whole so big, you can see his exposed jawbone. seaworld says he was injured during a show last month when he somehow came in contact with a portion of the pool. but animal rights activist says an anonymous whistleblower told them that he was attacked by other captive, angry orcas. >> you can't keep three males together in a fish pond. they'll have nowhere to go unless they can swim through concrete when they feel aggressive. >> reporter: peta has filed a complaint with the department of agriculture. >> it's hard to say if killer whales are playing rough or if these are just aggressive interactions between individuals. >> reporter: seaworld says veterinarians determined the injury is not an animal bite. and provided this video to abc news, showing him now on the mend. trainers and veterinarians say they are closely monitoring his recovery and treating him with antibiotics. >> he's doing very well,

interacting with all of the whales at seaworld. >> reporter: however, this giant was injured, experts say it's a reminder that these cute captive creatures are naturally wild and dangerous. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. now, the big surprise for next year's oscars. seth macfarlane, who created "the family guy" cartoon has been cast as the host. chris connelly has more on this out-of-the box pick. >> oh, the mike's over there. his expensive car into a swamp. was it an accident? or an elaborate fraud? also, we've been showing you this video this morning. startling. a man wrestling and swimming with 500-pound tigers on purpose. he's a professional. but he has a lot of people worried about the potential consequences. as you can see, there are certainly many of them. >> that is stunning tape. we're going to get to all of that. right now, we begin with a brutal killing of a new york college student. alexandra kogut was found dead in her dormroom. and her boyfriend, a star athlete, has been charged with her murder, after a clue posted on her twitter account just moments before her death. >> we have insights into the days day days and hours of alexandra kogut through twitter. mostly, they tweeted in anticipation in anticipation to

see her at college. but it ended in one final and serious message from her. all over the state of university new york campus near rochester, purple and white balloons. a way to pay tribute to the life of alexandra kogut, a freshman who had been on campus for a month, when police say her boyfriend, clayton whittemore, beat her in her dormroom. overnight, students and faculty consoled one another during a vigil on campus. >> she was so excited when he was coming. there was no sign of anything. >> reporter: kogut and whittemore went to the same high school. and based on twitter messages, both were excited about his visit this weekend. after a playful back and forth about food he was going to bring her, she tweeted, see you soon. it's her final two-word message

that police find so cryptic. at 12:13 a.m., she tweeted, should have known. authorities believe shortly after that, whittemore killed the freshman. >> the victim's mother showed concern. the university police went to the room and found the body. >> reporter: around 4:00 a.m., about 100 miles away at a rest stop, police arrested whittemore, a student at utica college and standout hockey player who was featured in athlete of the week in 2010. according to the complaint, whittemore initially admitted to killing his girlfriend but didn't give a motive. on saturday, he pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. >> she was so bubbly all the time and happy. she was just the best friend anyone could ask for. >> reporter: in a statement released by kogut's family, they describe her as a bright, beautiful young woman whose

lovely and sweet demeanor was infectious. her funeral is scheduled to take place on thursday. whittemore is being held without bail. now, to the incredible video at the center of a multimillion-dollar fraud trial. a man driving a supercar, swerving into a texas lagoon. the insurance company says he did it to collect the $2 million policy. but abc's john schriffen is here with more on what's developing. >> reporter: the reason this video has more than 3 million hits online is because of the car. it's so rare, experts say you may never see one in your lifetime. imagine a car enthusiast excited to capture the moment he spotted one. now, the amateur video is at the center of a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. lawyers say this is a multimillion-dollar disaster or an elaborate fraud.

one of just hundreds made and worth a cool $1 million, driving down a highway near houston, texas, three years ago. videotaped by car enthusiasts nearby. when out of nowhere -- but exactly what happened is now at the center of an insurance fraud case slated to begin later this month. at the same of the accident, the car's driver, andy house, told police he dropped his phone. when he looked up, he says he saw a pelican and veered to the right, straight into the salt water marsh. >> about 2 1/2 foot deep. the owner was on the side of the road. he was real calm and everything. >> reporter: just three weeks before the accident, the philadelphia insurance company issued a $2.2 million policy on the car. now, it says house committed fraud. that this infamous video shows no pelican and no attempts by house to brake. saying, instead he, quote, intentionally drove the bugatti

into the lagoon, to destroy the car and collect insurance proceeds, approximately twice the value of the vehicle. >> this video is exhibit a. it's the critical evidence that the insurance company's relying on to avoid this insurance policy. >> reporter: in the most bizarre twist, it says that house offered him cash to steal the car and set it on fire. this morning, house is countersuing, saying the company owes him $2.2 million. house turned down a request for an interview. but in a statement to abc news overnight, his attorney says, quote, we will not try our case in the media. but will rely on the facts and evidence admitted during the trial of the matter. >> oh. >> reporter: so, what makes this car so expensive? experts say it's the technology under the hood in this massive engine, which is why the insurance company was so suspicious when the driver left the engine running submerged in water. according to court documents his

her son. for "good morning america," juju chang, abc news, chicago. and joining us, now, to talk about her book "bad habits: confessions of a recovering catholic," is actress and best-selling author, jenny mccarthy. good morning. >> good morning. >> jesus was your justin bieber? >> he was my justin bieber. i had fonzie posters on the wall and i had a crush with jesus. >> you wrote the first time you made out with a boy in your room, you had to cover up the jesus poster. >> i was making out with a boy. oh, my god. jesus is right behind you. so, i pasted cyndi lauper on top of jesus. and it worked. thanks. >> we were talking about the fact i, too, were raised in a very catholic household. we were not, as you call them in your book, creasters. they go to mass on easter and christmas. the rest of us get angry every

mass and those creasteres get the best seat. >> every day during advent and lent. always in the front row. >> so many catholic stories growing up that everyone can relate to. my biggest fear throughout the book was that i was going to be possessed by satan at any point. and i think "the exorcist," is a great way the catholic church can scare the heck out of you. really, it scared us to the bone. me and my sisters slept every night with rosaries and statues. i replaced my cabbage patch dolls with st. joseph and -- you know, i was so scared every night. >> you also really wanted to be a nun when you were a little girl. >> i did. >> that is until you told a nun you wanted to be a nun and a mom. >> it's only logical when you start off with a clean slate, they teach you as catholics your goal in life is your goal is to get to heaven. naturally, i thought it was brilliant. why wouldn't i take the occupation of being a nun and get a one-way ticket to heaven. >> automatic in. >> that is until we went to the convent one day. my mom is a hairdresser.

i opened the door. i saw what they looked like in common folk clothing. and then, had a conversation with them about what i wanted to be when i grew up, which was a mom and a nun. they told me that wasn't possible. i knew that wasn't my destiny. i had to take off the habit and put on a push-up bra. >> you also took off the push-up bra. how did you go from being a wannabe nun as a kid to being a "playboy" playmate? >> i lot of things in the book, the understrings of being poor, it was devastating in childhood to watch my mom and dad struggle for food. where dinner was going to come from. and there's a part in the book where we thought we won a mcdonald's lottery. you know, the monopoly things. we thought we were rich. it was the worst three hours of our life. as time went on, i knew i would bail them out someday. and when i posed for "playboy," i went home and wrote a check out for all of their bills and

moved them into the suburbs. >> you also just posed again for "playboy" at the age of 39. >> i did. >> amen. you look fantastic at 39. did you have to do anything special to get ready for that? >> no. >> i hate you. >> i had to work out, tan and starve. those three things. >> just that little thing. >> just those three things. everyone said to me in hollywood, women are done after a certain age. and we're not sexy anymore. and i think the word milf was created for a reason because women are looking great later on. i figured why not show it off one more time, as well. >> you recently moved from southern california, from hollywood, to your hometown of chicago, one of my favorite cities. i love chicago. >> it's one of the greatest things i've ever done. >> why did you move back? and how did that affect evan, your son? >> growing up in chicago, people are like, a sense of community. and go to hollywood, and they're very fake.

[ cheers and applause ] okay. so, this is an adoring public that, for 20 years or so, has wanted this book. why now? >> first of all, i have to tell you. i'm slightly shocked that all of the music you chose, "just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in." >> tell that story. before kenny rogers was the country legend, he was making psychedelic pop. >> i was doing jazz. this song was written by a

friend of mine in high school. i was with the new christian minstrels. i was like, i want to record that. i can't let you do it because sammy davis jr. has it on hold. when i finally got my first edition, he let me do it. it was an incredible thing. it came at the psychedelic time of the '60s, you know? my life has been -- that's why it's called "luck or something like it," because i've been so lucky to be here and get there. and the fact i'm going to sing a duet with stephen colbert just really wraps up my life. >> that will be the topper. i want to ask about somebody else. it was a bee gees song. barry gibb wrote it. and dolly parton became a co-star of your life. >> i was singing "islands in the stream," and i said i don't like

[ cheers and applause ] let me just -- hi. we're back. we're live. thank you. i'm just bending the trees at the patch of broadway farms so the audience can see emeril lagasse. emeril, it is pumpkin season. and there's lots and lots of pumpkins around. i can't think of anything that tastes as delicious as a pumpkin. but you can. >> you know what we have today? three pumpkin dishes. we're going to make classic pumpkin pie. then, i have a great pumpkin soup. >> that's good. >> and i have a pumpkin lasagna. >> that's really good. >> with sausage, a little sage, delicious. >> you can't do this alone. and we have a special guest.

stephen colbert is here to be sous chef. >> anything you need me to do. >> you start over here. you roll up dough before? >> yes, i have. >> a little flour. standard pie crust. don't worry about that. there you go. there we go. perfect. now, what we're going to do is once we put that out and we form a nice shell, we're going to do a little trick called line baking. >> those are dried beans. >> here's what we're going to do. 425 degrees. we're going to use the beans as a pie weight. >> is that for real? is that one of the professional things that keeps everything down? >> you can buy pie weights. >> that looks delicious. >> you can use beans. >> brilliant. >> after we blind bake that, we have ten minutes, we have a crust.

now, we turn the oven down to 375. we're going to make the filling. >> are you all right over there? >> i'm in a panic. >> you've done an excellent job. >> they don't give me a lot of time here. come on. now, we're going to make the filling. >> okay. >> spatula. >> done. >> pumpkin. >> in. >> fresh. eggs. four eggs. all right. little bit of cream. you can start whisking that. >> at what point do i say bam? >> anytime you want. >> bam. >> sugar, white and brown. just get it all in there. >> you are a master in the kitchen. i can tell that right now. >> you can bam that if you want. but keep it in the bowl. >> kopow. >> what's something that people leave out of a pumpkin pie that makes a real difference?

>> spices. cinnamon, coriander. i use a little ginger. and you put the filling in right here. all right. how is it? good? >> it's fantastic. >> oh. >> who baked that? comes out of the oven looking this delicious, right? >> exactly. pumpkin soup, delicious. i make a little herb oil. and just drizzle that. taste this. >> hot or cold? >> served hot. set it down. >> emeril, jack here, cannot get enough. i can't keep him in pie. >> one of my favorite things, elizabeth, have you tasted the lasagna? >> i did. it's a unique taste. >> slices of pumpkin.
